Mt Garfield

Hiked by: Tim and Valerie on November 29, 2008 - via Garfield Trail

Mt Garfield is one of our favorites in any season, but somehow we always end up here in November.  I think it's the easy grade and sheltered trail that lead us here.

There was barely a dusting of snow at the trailhead, but we didn't bother to take any pictures of that.  Once we got a bit higher, then the accumulation of snow became more apparent.  The trail was nicely tracked out.

Once we got high enough, this Gray Jay found us.

It felt longer than it should have to get to the junction.  The switchbacks seemed to go on forever.  All the way up we were just hoping that the summit would not be socked in with clouds.

The clouds stayed a few hundred feet above our heads on the summit.  Flume and Liberty looked wonderful in the mid-day glow.

The Bonds were also looking grand.

Val on the summit.

Owl's Head.

There was probably 2-3 feet of snow at the summit, plus significant ice on the rocks.  The trees were beautiful.

Mt Lafayette had been our "backup plan" for today in case the road to the Mt Garfield trailhead was closed.  Luckily, we didn't need to use the backup plan as Lafayette was completely socked in.
