Bald Knob

Hiked Thanksgiving Day (11/27) 2008 by Tim and Valerie

We only had a couple hours available to us before the turkey needed to get in the oven, so we headed out for a shorter walk up to Bald Knob.  We used the Mt Kinsman trail off Route 116.

As you can see, we were prepared for snow, but there was no snow to be found at the lower elevations. For the first half-hour or so of the hike, we could see trail bikers through the trees every so often.  They never traveled on the same trail we were on though. Tim caught a picture of this beautiful woodpecker.

The trail was wet in several sections down low, and those areas were icy. Not difficult traveling, but some nice patterns in the ice.

Finally, we started to see some snow!

The water crossings are tricky this early in the "winter" season.  Ice looks solid, but it's not.  These crossings had some real slushy stuff.

Soon, the whole trail started to look like a slushy water crossing.

And then we popped out onto Bald Knob.  Cannon Mountain was frosty but visible.  The Kinsmans and Mt Moosilauke were in the clouds.  We had a nice snack, then headed back down.
